The Yamuna at Gokula

This picture was posted on the ROW (Rivers of the World Foundation) Website. This picture was taken by Dr. Subijoy Dutta in January of this year near the barrage that crosses the Yamuna at Gokula.

Dr. Dutta is a leading member of the Yamuna Foundation for Blue Water. He is quoted in the Hindustan Times, Jan. 14, 2010:
I am alarmed at the rising amount of garbage in the Yamuna bed. There is polythene, material related to religious events dumped on the riverbed that cause irreparable harm to the river ecosystem. The decaying polythene bags submerged in the riverbed decay and this leads to the formation of the chemical Phthalate which is harmful in combination with water. Such garbage needs to be removed from the river.
